What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is making your content the answer that AI assistants cite. Instead of only ranking in Google's list of blue links, AEO optimizes a page so ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews quote it directly when someone asks a question. As more searches end inside an AI answer, being the cited source matters as much as ranking.

How AEO differs from SEO

They overlap heavily — Google has said plainly that optimizing for its AI is still just SEO, with no separate magic file or trick. The difference is emphasis. Classic SEO aims to rank a page; AEO aims to make a page the clean, extractable answer an engine is comfortable quoting. The foundations (crawlable, fast, relevant pages) still apply — AEO layers structure and verifiable substance on top.

What makes a page AEO-ready

Why it matters now

A growing share of searches never reach a results page — the person asks an AI and gets one answer with a handful of citations. If your page isn't built to be one of those citations, you're invisible in that moment, no matter how you rank in the classic list. For local and multi-location businesses especially, being the answer for "best [service] in [town]" is the new front line.
